Ed Asner from “Lou Grant” and Pixar’s “Up” Died Yesterday

Ed Asner from “Lou Grant” and Pixar’s “Up” died yesterday of natural causes.  He was 91 years old.

Asner played newsroom boss Lou Grant on the classic sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” from 1970 to 1977.  He then played the same character in the DRAMA series “Lou Grant” from 1977 to 1982.

He won three Emmys for “Mary Tyler Moore” and two more for “Lou Grant”, making him one of only two actors to win a comedy and drama Emmy for playing the same role.   (The other is Uzo Aduba, for playing “Crazy Eyes” on “Orange Is the New Black”.)

Asner is probably best known these days as the voice of Carl Fredricksen, the old widower in Pixar’s “Up”.  He was doing the voice again for the upcoming Disney+ series “Dug Days”.

Asner also played Santa in “Elf” and Johnny’s stepfather Sid on “Cobra Kai”.
