James Gunn, of “Guardians of the Galaxy” fame, wants to make a “Gilligan’s Island” movie, but with a dark twist: In his version, the castaways get desperate and hungry, and start killing and eating each other.
The idea originally came from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, who wrote “Adaptation”, “Being John Malkovich”, and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”.
Gunn says Kaufman pitched this idea in the ’90s, and Warner Brothers wanted to do it. But “Gilligan’s Island” creator Sherwood Schwartz refused.
After Gunn hit it big with “Guardians”, he went to Warner Brothers and Kaufman to try to resurrect the movie. Schwartz was dead by this time, but his ESTATE nixed it.
But Gunn says that if the Schwartz estate ever changes its mind, he’s ready to go.
After Guardians I tried to resurrect the idea & wanted to direct. It seemed Warners & Charlie were interested but, this time, the estate of the late Sherwood Schwartz nixed it. Anyway, if the Schwartz estate changes their mind, I’m here.
