Four Rules for Cuffing Season

October marks the start of “cuffing season,” where single people pair up for a few months before ending their relationship in the spring.  Here are some tips to help you decide if cuffing season is worth your time.

1.  Figure out what you want.  Be honest with yourself about what you want, and whether a temporary relationship will be fulfilling.  If you want something long-term, cuffing season probably isn’t for you.

2.  Consider just how deep you’re willing to get.  Since there will likely be an expiration date on your relationship, check in with yourself and the other person on how things will work.  Will you bring them around your friends?  Your family?  There’s no right or wrong answer, but you should be on the same page.

3.  Don’t let the pressure get to you.  It’s a bad idea to cuff up with someone just because you’re super lonely or because you don’t want to deal with your nosy family members bugging you about being single at Thanksgiving.

4.  Check in occasionally.  Even if you’re both totally upfront about wanting a short-term thing going in, at some point, the line between “casual fling” and “taking it to another level” may blur.  Checking in with them once in a while will help make it so things don’t get too awkward.
