New in Theaters: “Renfield” and “The Pope’s Exorcist”

1.  Renfield  (R)  Trailer

Nicholas Hoult plays Renfield, Dracula’s long-suffering servant.  He does his every bidding and lures in prey for his master, who’s played by none other than Nicolas Cage.

After being a servant for centuries, Renfield wants to see what else life has to offer.  While in New Orleans, he falls in love with a traffic cop played by Awkwafina.  He then gains the courage to stand up to his boss to try to break free.

2.  The Pope’s Exorcist  (R)  Trailer

Russell Crowe plays the Pope’s exorcist, who uncovers a centuries-old conspiracy that the Vatican has desperately tried to keep hidden. You might also recognize the Pope (Franco Nero) as the guy who ran Rome’s Continental Hotel in “John Wick 2”.

It’s based on the memoirs of Father Gabriele Amorth, a Catholic priest who claims to have performed thousands of exorcisms for the Vatican.  Father Amorth also helped found the International Association of Exorcists who, as we learned earlier this week, aren’t very impressed with the movie’s trailer.

3.  Mafia Mamma  (R)  Trailer  (Limited)

Toni Collette is an average American mom who travels to Italy to attend her grandfather’s funeral.  But when a gunfight erupts, she learns that he was a Mafia Don, and it was his dying wish for her to take over the family business.

It also stars Rob Huebel from the Adult Swim series “Children’s Hospital” and Italian actress Monica Bellucci.  You might know her as Persephone in “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions”.

4.  Sweetwater  (PG-13)  Trailer  (Limited)

It’s based on the true story of Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton.  It follows his career with the Harlem Globetrotters, and when he made history in 1950 as the first African American to sign a contract with the NBA.  He joined the New York Knicks.

Everett Osborne plays Sweetwater in his breakout role.  The movie also stars Cary Elwes (“The Princess Bride”), Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”), and Richard Dreyfuss.
